NEW-BUILD bungalows in Lydney are helping to tackle the shortage of homes for downsizers.

Research on behalf of retirement community operators found that while nearly 60% of surplus bedrooms are in homes occupied by the over 65s, a lack of age-friendly housing was limiting the options for many who wanted to downsize.

The report by the Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation called for the building of homes suitable for one and two-person households to be prioritised, along with better promotion of the benefits of downsizing.

Edenstone Homes is already building homes well-suited for downsizers across its developments, with five styles of bungalows available as part of River View Garden Village in Lydney.

Sales director Adele McCoy explained:

“We recognise that there’s a need for new homes for buyers on every rung of the housing ladder, including those looking to downsize. River View Garden Village offers a varied selection of homes to cater for all market segments with the rare opportunity to own a brand new bungalow.

“By building bungalows we’re addressing a shortage of this type of home as they account for just 10% of domestic properties, according to Valuation Agency data. In doing so we’re offering those considering downsizing a chance to be part of a new community where they will be able to grow their own food if they take on an allotment and to stay active by making use of fitness trails, gym equipment and cycle hire facilities. It’s the ideal solution for empty nesters and those who want a more manageable home but aren’t yet ready to live on a retirement development.”

Current prices for bungalows at River View Garden village range from £224,995 for a two-bedroom Eastbourne up to £335,000 for a three-bedroom Budleigh.

A three-bedroom Boscombe bungalow show home is available to view by appointment only, with video tours available via the website.

The Boscombe offers 816sq ft of living space.

It features a combined kitchen and dining room, with two stainless steel ovens, induction hob and integrated fridge freezer. The lounge is at the rear, with French doors offering easy access to the garden.

The master bedroom benefits from an en-suite, leaving the family bathroom to serve the remaining two bedrooms.

“The bungalows we’re building are a great option for a range of buyers, not just downsizers,” Adele added.

“First time buyers or couples could find that a bungalow is an alternative to an apartment, with the added bonus of having their own garden.”

The show home and sales centre at River View, Highfield Road, Lydney, are currently open by appointment only. For more information call 07387 262 347 or 01291 674 800.
